2024 Triumph Scrambler 400 X And Speed 400 Enter America At A Bargain Price

The Scrambler 400 X and Speed 400 both undercut their key rivals

2023 marked a new chapter for Triumph Motorcycles, as the British bikemaker set foot in the single-cylinder entry-level segment. It debuted the Scrambler 400 X and Speed 400 back in June, both of which have now made their American debut. As suggested by their Indian prices, the two small Triumphs come to the States at a bargain MSRP, much lower than their rivals. Also, pre-bookings are open and deliveries will begin in January 2024.

The Speed 400 becomes Triumph’s most affordable motorcycle in America, priced at just $4,995. You have three colorways to pick from, namely Phantom Black, Caspian Blue, Carnival Red–all of which bear the same price tag. At this MSRP, the Speed launches a fierce attack on its key rivals here. It undercuts the BMW G 310 R by $195 and the Honda CB300R by $154.

The closest contender is Yamaha’s MT-03, which sells for $4,999. But you should know the MT is yet to receive a price revision for MY24, so the price difference between the Triumph and Yamaha will become larger in the future. In the meantime, the 2023 KTM 390 Duke costs almost ~$1,000 more than the British bike.

What do you get for the money, you ask? Well, plenty. The heart of the matter is a 398cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that churns out 39.5 horsepower (at 8,000 RPM) and 27.7 pound-feet (at 6,500 RPM). Triumph has housed the engine inside a steel perimeter chassis, paired with a bolt-on subframe. The chassis relies on 43 mm USD forks and gas-charged monoshock for suspension duties. Brakes comprise a 300 mm disc up top and a 230 mm rotor outback.

There’s also an extensive feature list. We’re talking ride-by-wire throttle, traction control, all-LED lights, dual-channel ABS, immobilizer, and slipper clutch. This is topped by a semi-digital instrument cluster to keep the modern-classic flavor intact. Same goes for the overall neo-retro styling, comprising premium bits like golden forks, bar-end mirrors, and air vents on the side panels.

Next, the Scrambler 400 X is priced at $5,595 with three colors on offer, namely Khaki Green, Carnival Red, and Phantom Black. This makes the motorcycle $1,200 more affordable than the new Honda SCL500, and $54 cheaper than the Husqvarna Svartpilen 401. To make matters sweeter, the price is just $500 more than the underpowered and simple Royal Enfield Scram 411.

The Scrambler 400 X justifies the extra $600 over the Speed with some added equipment. Aesthetic bits include tan-brown seats, handguards, tank pads, a headlight grill, and a dual-pod exhaust. Whereas, the off-road-centric elements comprise a taller handlebar, 19-inch front wheel, switchable ABS, a bigger 320 mm front disc, and marginally more suspension travel. Everything else–features, engine, design–comes straight from the Speed.
