Woman looking for good Samaritan who stopped theft of her bike

ARVADA, Colo. — Malinda Smith wrote an e-mail to 9NEWS a few weeks ago, looking for help finding a man who stopped a thief from stealing her bike while she waited for a train at the RTD Olde Town Arvada station.

Smith was sitting on the platform at the station on Sept. 11. She had recently started riding her daughter’s trick bike to and from the train to commute to work. While sitting there, a man walked up and stopped beside her. Within moments, that man grabbed her bike and started riding away on it.

“I just wasn’t going to let him get my bike," Smith said. "That’s all I was thinking, was like 'Oh no, you don’t.'"

Smith chased the man down the platform, trying to pull the bike away from him, but she couldn’t stop him.

A man who was waiting to board a train farther down the platform saw the situation happening. He stepped in, grabbed the handlebar on the bike and stopped the thief.

Surveillance video of the incident, obtained by 9NEWS, shows that same man, clad in an AC/DC T-shirt, appear to encourage the thief to walk away. He does it all while keeping a beverage in his hand.

Eventually the would-be thief walks away and Smith walks back with her bike.

“I’m so appreciate to that gentleman for sticking his hand out and stopping him,” Smith said, noting that she’d like to meet the man and thank him someday.

Smith said the incident hasn’t scared her away from using the train.

“Just be aware of your surroundings," she said. "But know there are good people out there that will help you out if you’re in a situation. They helped me.”
